Documentafifteen x Seefried
Inland, Sourabh Phadke
During documentafifteen in 2022, I had the pleasure of contributing to two distinct projects and developing artworks with the Spanish collective INLAND and Indian architect Sourabh Phadke. Sourabh Phadke's "D-shaped bottles" are an artistic exploration of raw materials and resource distribution. Together with Sourabh, I co-developed the concept, design, and materialization of these unique bottles, creating an edition of ten. This project delved into various aspects of organizing a large exhibition like documenta, addressing issues such as merchandise production, the value comparison between merchandise and art, and visitor-generated waste. Unfortunately, due to visa complications caused by Brexit, Sourabh could not return to Kassel in time, halting the project. We were left with a few D-shaped bottles and the lingering idea of a fun, thought-provoking project, along with the discussions and experiences it might have sparked. Despite these challenges, I thoroughly enjoyed working with Sourabh and Malene and am grateful for the memories we created. INLAND is a collaborative agency founded in 2009 by Fernando García Dory, providing a platform for diverse actors in agricultural, social, and cultural production. With Fernando, I worked on several pieces exhibited at the Ottoneum. We repurposed leftover clay from the Jatiwangi art factory's exhibition location to sculpt objects resembling roof tiles shaped on the backs of sheep. This same clay was also used to create clay pockets for water plants, which were placed in the pond outside the Ottoneum. Additionally, we crafted a tile that blends ancient aesthetics with contemporary interpretation, forming a crucial link between INLAND's exhibition and their collaborative video work with renowned artist Hito Steyerl. To achieve the ancient tile's appearance, I developed a specialized glaze. As part of TOKONOMA e.V., which I have actively been a part of since 2013, we were invited for a two-week showcase at the Fridericianum by the GUDSKUL collective. Collaborating with INLAND and Sourabh Phadke, as well as participating in the TOKONOMA e.V. showcase, made these projects immensely enjoyable and fulfilling.
